Neo Themis and The Government of The Gambia (GoG) via the Minister of Petroleum and Energy have signed on 12th April in Banjul a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development, financing, construction and operation of several solar PV power plants with a total capacity of 30Wp, supplemented with advanced battery storage.

This landmark project will not only revolutionize The Gambia’s energy landscape but also set a precedent for private investments in the sector as the first independent power producer (IPP) in the country.

With the GoG setting its sights on achieving 50% renewable energy by 2030, the project is poised to play a pivotal role in realizing this ambitious goal. The project will increase domestic power production by a remarkable 30%, significantly reducing reliance on expensive diesel and heavy fuel oil (HFO), that currently dominate the energy mix for electricity generation.

By selling electricity at a price approximately 60% cheaper than current options, the project will make a tangible difference in the lives of Gambians in rural areas, especially in a country where electricity tariffs rank among the highest in Africa.

In its first phase of 10,5 MW, the project will generate circa 31 GWh of clean energy and connect over 22,600 persons to the grid. Furthermore, by substituting heavy fuel oil production, the project aims to mitigate approximately 39,600+ metric tons per year of CO2 emissions, contributing significantly to global efforts in combating climate change.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, attended by government officials and the management team of Themis, the Minister of Energy emphasized the pivotal role of renewable energy in achieving The Gambian 2030 vision and ensuring universal clean and affordable energy access for all Gambians.

Mrs Tas Anvaripour, CEO of Neo Themis, thanked the Minister and all teams involved for their continuous support in achieving this milestone in the country’s renewable energy journey. “Neo Themis is honoured to partner with The Gambian Government on this innovative and pioneer project for the country. The MOU is committing Neo Themis to bring its expertise and fast track the project implementation to make it a visible success.”

This partnership underscores the confidence placed in Themis’ effectiveness in implementing strategic energy infrastructure solutions in Africa. Themis is proud to be at the forefront of sustainable development in The Gambia and look forward to delivering tangible, lasting benefits to the country.
